‘T’ Junctions – emerging.
Recap: MSPSL. Approaching junctions to turn left or right.
Objective: To approach and emerge from a ‘T’ junction safely and under control with regard for all other road users.
Main points: Using MSPSL. Good use of mirrors, signalling at correct time, adopting correct position for the turn, speed of approach and selecting correct gear, not coasting, good observation as approaching junction. Is there a clear view into the main road? Is the junction open or closed?
Briefing:
Turning left at end of road – If road width allows keep your driving line approx 1 mtr from kerb. Start MSPSL routine. Make good mirror checks and signal appropriately. Ease off gas and brake gently assessing how you will negotiate the junction. Check your view to the left and right as soon as possible and decide whether the junction is open or closed. Can you see clearly or is your view hindered by buildings or vehicles parked in the main road? Check the road signs – do they say stop or give way? Stop means stop!!! And if so you will be dropping into 1st gear to stop on the line. If it says give way it doesn’t mean that the view is good so proceed with caution, 2nd gear may be ok, but be prepared to stop and select 1st gear. If you have stopped and are proceeding when its safe you will be using tight clutch control holding it just over the biting point until you have completed the turn. Only turn onto the main road if there is no chance of causing oncoming traffic to slow down, swerve, or stop. After entering the new road use mirrors to check speed and position of traffic behind you, and if safe, speed up adopting a normal driving line. Ensure your signal has cancelled.
Turning right at end of road – From your normal driving position start MSPSL routine. Your approach to the junction will be exactly as if you were turning left except that you will be signalling right and moving towards the centre of the road.. At the end of the road you will have to cross the path of oncoming traffic. Remember to drive straight ahead before turning the wheel to the right because you are crossing to the other side of the road. Turn too soon and you will find yourself driving in the middle of the new road! Check your mirrors and speed up adopting a normal driving line. Ensure your signal has cancelled.

This is funny but gets you thinking - remember motorcyclists are harder to spot so take great care when emerging at junctions. - View Video
