Moving off / Stopping.

To move away from the side of the road.

Prepare the controls of the car to be ready to move off - clutch down, palm into 1st gear, set the gas (about the thickness of a pound coin) holding it steady.

Slowly lift the clutch until the engine noise changes slightly - the biting point and hold steady.

Now do good all round checks - both blind spots and all mirrors, signal if beneficial, and prepare to release the handbrake - holding it up with the button in.

Repeat all round checks and if it is safe to move off slowly drop the handbrake as you increase the gas, gradually raising the clutch pedal.

The car will start to move. Continue to allow the clutch to come up smoothly as you move forward.

Continue to cover the clutch pedal because you will be changing almost immediately to 2nd gear.

As the car moves steer slightly to the right, then left, adopting a normal driving line approx a metre from the kerb.

Check mirrors again and increase speed changing up gears.

To stop at the side of the road.

Look well ahead and select a safe and convenient place to pull up.

Check all mirrors and signal left if beneficial.

Lift off the gas, cover brake and clutch.

Steer left and then right as you pull closer to the kerb.

Check your stopping point, brake gently to walking pace, press clutch fully down, and gently brake to a stop, releasing pressure on footbrake as the car comes to rest. (By releasing the brake the car will come to a smooth stop and not jar to a halt).

Keep your feet still, apply handbrake, select neutral, and cancel the signal if used. Rest your feet.

Carefully check your right mirror and blindspot before opening the door.
